Things You Didn’t Know About Subway Tile

If you’ve ever thought subway tile closely resembled the tile of an underground subway station, you wouldn’t be entirely wrong. In fact, subway tile originated in New York City subway stations in the early 1900s. What you may not know is why it was chosen – for its appealing, easy-to-clean, stain-resistant, and light-reflective nature. The designers wanted commuters to feel safe and sanitary while using this new form of transportation.

Those same properties that made subway tile a desirable choice in the early 20th century continue to make these tiles a practical option still today. There’s no shortage of usage for this household staple as it comes in various sizes, shapes, textures, and finishes, and can be used with any design style. There’s not much that subway tile doesn’t pair well with. It’s versatile, easy to maintain, and budget-friendly.

It Comes Endless Variety of Shapes, Sizes, and Finishes

There are many variations of subway tile these days, as it has advanced way past the original rectangular shape and glossy finish. It comes in multiple shapes, sizes, finishes, and pattern lays that are fun and easy to play around with. Even glass or square tiles can be considered subway! Let your imagination run wild by choosing a matte finish, a beveled lay, a darker grout color, or even playing with textures if you so desire.

Subway tile may often be laid horizontally, but it doesn’t have to be. You can upgrade the classic look by laying it vertically or in other patterns such as herringbone, offset, diagonal, or chevron. Whichever orientation you choose to lay your tile, it will immediately add a fresh and unique look to the space.

It’s Not Just for Bathroom Walls & Kitchens

Although subway tiles are commonly found on kitchen backsplashes and bathroom walls, they can be used in any room.

Where and How to Use Subway Tiles Inside the Home

Subway tiles are also perfect for laundry rooms, mudrooms, and fireplace surrounds, too! Keep in mind it should never be used on the floor, as the material is much too thin and would easily crack.

Subway Tile in the Bathroom

In the bathroom, subway tiles can be used on the walls and in the shower or tub area. The white, glossy finish of these tiles keeps these shower and tub areas looking fresh and very easy to clean.

Try using these tiles in different patterns and directions to highlight different areas of the space. Consider using more neutral tiles when you want to perfectly compliment busier designs in the room, such as mosaic floor tile and wall paneling. Or create a unique and complex design with subway tiles to accent simpler designs in the space.

These bathroom photos show just how important grout color is – the grey grout offers a subtle but distinct look that stands out.

In both rooms, the white perfectly accents the strip of tile in the middle and mosaic tiling on the floor and shelving.

Although larger tiles are used here to give these spaces a unique look and make the space look bigger, it still creates a timeless and classic style. Exuding luxury and class, these gray subway tiles (in the photo below) stray from the classic look, have a matte finish, and look lovely surrounding the strip of multicolored, staggered tiles.
