How to Style a Bookcase
Arranging bookshelves can be a fun and creative way to showcase your books while also adding personality to your space. Here are some tips for creating an aesthetically pleasing and organized bookshelf:
Color Coordination: Arrange books by color to create a visually appealing and Instagram-worthy bookshelf. This will add the decorative element to your space.
Size Matters: Arrange books by size, either in ascending or descending order. This creates a sense of order and prevents the shelf from looking cluttered.
If your bookshelf is more decorative than library…. then it’s time to mix in some decorative items such as vases, candles, figurines, pictures, decorative bookends (which are both functional and decorative) and any other interesting objects you have. Intersperse books with the decorative items to add visual interest.
To accomplish this divide each shelf into sections, creating little vignettes on each shelf. As a general rule, each vignette should have some books and 2 objects (the rule of 3s). Visually you want to break things up so there’s lots but not too much to look at. Display your books both vertically and horizontally to add variety.
Your objects should include personal items such as framed photos, souvenirs, or sentimental objects . This will make the bookshelf feel like a reflection of your personality and look curated. In other words, not all items should be purchased at the same store so it doesn’t look very ‘matchy matchy’ or impersonal. These items should be different sizes and have meaning to you.
Add some bookends. They not only serve a functional purpose but can also add style to your bookshelf. Consider using decorative bookends that complement your overall theme.
Instead of stacking all books vertically, try placing some horizontally. This adds variety and can be a great way to showcase visually interesting book covers.
Create focal points. Arrange a stack of books or a decorative item as a focal point on each shelf. This draws the eye and makes the arrangement more interesting.
Include personal items of different heights and textures such as framed photos, souvenirs, faux or real plants/greenery, vases, decorative boxes, and sentimental objects to make the bookshelf feel like a reflection of your personality.
Leave some empty space. Don't overcrowd the shelves. Leaving some empty space creates a sense of balance and prevents the shelves from looking too busy.
Pro tip: measure the height, width and depth of your shelves and keep these measurements in your phones notes section. That way when you come across something you like, you will know if it will fit.
Remember that there are no strict rules when it comes to arranging bookshelves. Experiment with different arrangements until you find a style that suits your taste and complements your space.
