Get in the Spirit of the Season with My Favorite Fall Décor Ideas!

Everyone’s favorite season is here, and it’s time to decorate accordingly! Even if you don’t love the cooler temps and shorter days, most people love the vibes the fall season offers. The beginning of fall signifies the time of year to get cozy, retreat, and go inwards. I know some of us felt a bit uninspired last year to pull out all the stops and fully decorate for the holidays, so hopefully, we’ve all been able to refill our inspirational buckets and are ready to get creative this year!

Whether you plan on going big or small, there’s plenty of fun fall decorating ideas for everyone. If you’re not sure where to begin, think about warm hues of red and orange, blankets, throws, pillows, books, pumpkins, and candles. Decorating for fall each year never gets old, but let’s make sure we keep it fun and fresh.

Functional Ideas

Centerpieces

A wonderful functional idea is to create a fall-inspired kitchen table centerpiece. The possibilities are really limitless here, and pieces can be moved in and out for variety throughout the entire season. I like to start with seasonal tall flowers surrounded by a fall scented candle, some coasters, and a colorful New England foliage tabletop book. Combine all these items atop a circular tree trunk or mirror tray and you have the base for a perfectly curated centerpiece.

Shelving and Signs

If you’ve got lots of fall odds and ends to showcase, shelving is the perfect way to display everything and make them stand out. Shelving can be easily added to any wall space and is a great way to make use of smaller spaces, too. Using shelves for decorating is a fun way to let your creativity shine through and doesn’t have to be expensive. Mix and match different shapes, textures, and colors such as mini wreaths, empty bottles, plates, vases, frames, candles, pinecones, signs, owls, and baskets. The possibilities are endless, and I truly believe anyone can cultivate the perfect fall shelving display, even if you don’t consider yourself very crafty.

Banners and signs have gotten a lot of attention lately — and for good reason. Banners or signs featuring words such as gather, grateful, blessed, and thankful are perfect for fall and easily carry over into the Thanksgiving holiday and early December. I think we can all appreciate a cross-functional decoration that can stay up for weeks. Just be careful not to overdo it with too many signs!

Pumpkins

Pumpkins deserve their own category because of their cuteness and versatility. If the only thing you do this year to decorate for fall is pick up some pumpkins, I consider that a success. Decorative pumpkins go far beyond the standard orange color these days. You can choose from glass, ceramic, and cloth of all different sizes and colors, and could even consider decorating or carving them yourself. Place them in baskets, stack them on top of each other, or create a full centerpiece with just pumpkins.

Coffee Bars

What could be more fun than a fall-themed coffee bar? Fully stock the bar with pumpkin-spiced flavored coffee perfectly showcased in a Halloween-themed coffee holder and plenty of syrup (think pumpkin spice, brown sugar cinnamon, peppermint, and salted caramel syrup — the sweeter the better!) Complete the bar with tubs of cinnamon, hot chocolate, and marshmallows.  Surround the space with seasonal coffee mugs and your other favorite fall décor pieces. You can even display a small bottle of your favorite liqueur or spirit for cozy nights in enjoying a cocktail by the fire. Coffee bars are another fun way to let your creativity run wild.

Bring the Outdoors, Indoors

No matter the season, plants and flowers can go a long way to upgrading a space. Mums are always a popular choice for the fall season because of their festive shades of red, yellow, purple, peach, orange, and white. But there are plenty of other lovely and colorful plants to include in the mix such as purple fountain grass, pansies, Sumac, bittersweet, and Amaranthus, just to name a few. Another idea is to cut some branches from your yard to fill a vase. They can be used as-is, or spray painted.

Front Porch

Don’t forget to decorate the outside of your house since this is the only glimpse into your decorating skills that most of the world will get to see! Adorn your front steps and porch with haystacks, scarecrows, pumpkins, and gourds of varying sizes, large DYI signs, planted seasonal flowers, and a gorgeous fall wreath centered on the front door.

Halloween

Some people skip the fall theme altogether and go straight to Halloween. Personally, I love incorporating Halloween themes into my fall décor without overdoing it. Adding in some pumpkin string lights, placing a decorative witch into the corner of your living room, or switching out your pillows for a ghost or Jack-O-Lantern-shaped pillow adds a little spooky flair without compromising style.
